Building A Grass Bridge

When I was younger, I watched a lot of Nature and Nova on PBS. I was always fascinated by exotic creatures and cultures and I found the Serengeti, Galapagos, and the Andes. In one episode, I watched the local villagers build a bridge out of Qoya – a local grass.

Every year, the community comes together and rebuilds the bridge. It’s about 120 feet long and constructed entirely by hand. Having seen the PBS special which documented this amazing feat, I always wanted to travel to Cuzco, Peru and help them build their bridge.

I wouldn’t know the language or the culture but I wanted to be a part of a very special annual tradition that seemed to be greater than any one individual. I wanted to be a part of that. I might not ever be able to see this bridge or help build it but I’d certainly like to visit the Andes one day and meet the people and their other amazing sights.
